Exploring supplements and especially ensuring I'm supplementing electrolytes in the beginning stages of medical keto have been absolutely crucial in feeling well while making this transition. In this video, I share with you exactly which supplements I take and why, as well as what my keto coach Nicole Laurent has to say about some of the supplements she has recommended I take while on medical keto. I also share some of the supplements that I intend to explore in the future once I know how medical keto affects my illness, so that they are less confounding variables in this project. Pill case I talk about being very useful: https://amzn.to/3vbjxq4 *UPDATE:* Nicole had some additional insights regarding what I shared about taking ashwaganda and being interested in probiotics down the line. Here’s the advice she shared with me: “I want to encourage you to not take that daily but on an as needed basis if you are dealing with a stressful time. On a ketogenic diet, your adrenal system starts working properly again. This herb is known to modulate hormones. I don't want it messing with your hormones because we are getting that back on track. It also has effects on liver, immune function and thyroid. It has neuromodulation effects on dopamine, serotonin and GABA! Your keto diet has got all those covered. It is a really powerful modulator in a body where things are not going well. But we do not understand it's effects in a body where things are going right. We don't know if the pathways modulated add to the ketogenic diet or get in the way. That said, I like a bit of Ashwagandha tea from time to time if I am feeling stressed for some reason, am a little tired, etc. I like Organic India brand. And then probiotics! Please do not add a probiotic until we talk more about it first or even wait until after your six month experiment is over. The ketogenic diet radically changes the gut microbiome in favorable ways. We want to get out of it's way and let it do it's magic, which can include stopping seizures and helping put bipolar and schizophrenia in remission! As humans, and our current state of the research, we do not know best when it comes to microbiome. The ketogenic diet is already upregulating "good" bacteria in a sustainable way and rate that no probiotic is going to be able to touch. Also, most of the research on microbiome are not on ketogenic guts, although there are a few. So by all means go down the rabbit hole and explore in general, but I do not recommend you play with probiotics for yourself at this point in your recovery.” Timestamps: 00:00 The mistake I made last time I tried keto 01:20 The pill case that makes it so much easier - find it here: https://amzn.to/3vbjxq4 02:34 Why I'm taking additional supplements more specifically for schizophrenia 03:20 Electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, sodium) 06:57 Acetyl L Carnitine 08:41 Vitamin D 09:10 Multivitamin 12:17 NAC and Glycine (precursors for glutathione) 15:04 Ashwaganda 15:33 I'm still on meds!!! 16:05 Supplements I intend to explore in the future (methylfolate, ginko biloba, sarcosine, omega 3 fatty acids, lion's mane, and probiotics MEDICAL KETO RESOURCES You can learn more about medical keto for mental illnesses on the Metabolic Mind YouTube channel (@metabolicmind) and on their website https://www.metabolicmind.org/ You can find more about my keto coach Nicole Laurent and her work on her website: https://www.mentalhealthketo.com/ You can also learn more about metabolic health and mental illness from the book 'Brain Energy' by Dr. Christopher Palmer - https://brainenergy.com/ HOW TO TEST YOUR KETONES (important for medical keto!) • The Keto Mojo blood glucose and ketone monitor is a finger prick blood test to accurately measure ketone and glucose levels.
