Cotton balls are made up of cellulose or synthetic polyester, both of which cannot be broken down by the stomach. These fibrous materials clump up, forming bezoars that obstruct the GI tract. The dieter will experience nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, and may develop ulcers in the stomach. Life-threatening bezoars required surgical removal. There has been a recent surge in the number of videos on Youtube of people performing this diet. Many of the videos depict girls in the age range between 9 and 16. Models have also been suspected of eating cotton balls for years, Lynn Grefe, president and CEO of the National Eating Disorder Association, said in an ABC report.
