Transcript: "Are you wondering what the best exercise strategy for losing weight on a GLP-1 agonist is? Hi, I'm Dr. Ali, an obesity medicine physician, and I cannot wait to talk about this because it's one of my favorite things to talk about. Okay, so in traditional diet culture, we typically think that more is more. So we need to be doing strength training and cardio and flexibility and all these things. And the more you do, the better the results you're going to get. in the GLP-1 weight loss world - that is crap, okay, because what we're doing is a couple of different things. Key strategies for GLP-1 agonist-assisted weight loss is going to be to maintain muscle mass and also manage hunger, okay? So the idea is that when you are going to maintain your muscle mass, you have to eat a certain amount of protein and you have to stimulate your muscles just enough so that your body says, hey, we need to keep these muscles. Now, we don't want to overexercise and then get uber hungry because then that's going to really counteract the medication. Okay now the medication does much more than just the hunger management. In general though, my individuals who are on a GLP-1 agonist and who are athletes and really exercising a lot, they've actually had to go up on their dose at times. I'm going to talk to you a little bit about how three days a week 10 minutes of a heart rate up, heart rate down style of training. Now, this is not high impact. This is actually strength training, but what we're doing is we're doing it in intervals. So it actually allows your heart rate to come up and your heart rate to come down. And so a lot of people may call this high intensity interval training. I don't call it that because it freaks people out, but that's what it is. High intensity interval training is the type of training that's been known to decrease visceral body fat. So let me show you my model. Visceral body fat. This is going to be the body fat around your organs. This is more of the dangerous kind of body fat. I don't even like to call body fat dangerous, but in general, when you have the body fat surrounding organs, that's the one that we definitely want to decrease first if we have excess. High intensity interval training has been shown to do just this. I find that 10 minutes, three days a week, strength training in an interval style approach is super effective for individuals who are on a weight loss journey using a GLP-1 agonist, and it's doable, it's manageable, and I have to tell you that even if it's difficult for you to do certain movements like squats, like push-ups, all those things, you don't have to do those things, okay? You could actually get strength training in just from the comfortable seat of your chair, and all of that is coming soon because I actually am starting to create my workouts that are going to have programming for everyone.
